It is my opinion that misinformation is the leading cause of the rise in maternal and newborn mortality in America. We are indirectly being told that planning a hospital-led, medical induction, and/or getting a C-section is a top tier approach to the misconceptions of birth. Yet, positive experiences surrounding these objectively barbaric approaches to delivering a baby, are rare to none. The other option, is a version of motherhood that transforms the childbearing experience into a domestic extreme— think Ballerina Farm and the trad-wife phenomenon.

Both sides of the coin are worth fearing, and dare women to brave the truths of motherhood; as if it is a role or experience to be sensationalized. Birth should be empowering. Someone should be monitoring the potential progression from pain to suffering. The birthing person should have choice and informed consent. The transition into becoming a parent should be a supported experience. Having a postpartum support system in place is not an option, it’s a necessity. Being aware of the vast possibilities of birth and the options available before labor occurs is not an option, it’s a necessity.
